“Tens of millions to host nuclear waste facility” shouts the headline in a local paper.

I hate to appear negative in this best of all possible worlds when visions of sugar plums dance in politicians’ heads, but reading about this bonanza makes me uneasy. Where are the hard questions?  We are talking about a proposal for something that has the potential of irreversibly changing our municipality forever.

Do we know what the cost will be to the municipality? Yes, Virginia, there are no free rides. When members of council, with two exceptions, Gord Campbell and Guy Anderson, are blinded by the glow of nuclear waste or the dazzle of gold, then citizens have a duty to raise questions and speak out.

I have no doubt the designers, engineers, and all involved in the technical aspects of the project will have done their utmost to assure safety. I accept their sincerity and professionalism. History, however, offers numerous examples where man’s intelligence and expertise have failed. The Titanic was unsinkable and the Ocean Ranger oil rig, according to its designer, was “impossible to sink”. We remember space shuttles that had back-up systems and fail-safe mechanisms so they could not self-destruct. But they did. Hubris underlies many tragedies. Man is not perfect and science will never be complete. We simply do not know enough to place this facility adjacent to one of our Great Lakes and adjacent to population centres.

As a municipality, we cannot be all things to all people. Before we make irreversible decisions, we need serious debate on the kind of municipality we want. Council just paid $25,000 for a promotional video and logo. Does the video mention us becoming the nuclear waste destination of North America? Apart from those whose work in the nuclear industry brings them to Kincardine, who else would want to move to the nuclear waste capital of North America?

My wife will vote ‘no’, as I do.  Because council holds the democratic process in contempt, we get only one vote. Responsible democracy is not well served.
