Trail building is not all work!

For the record, three of the current councillors: Maureen Couture,

Gordon Campbell, and Randy Roppel did not serve on the last Council and Campbell, to his credit, has raised or supported substantive issues and we  hope Maureen Couture will turn the desolate Tiny Tots Park into a  child’s jewel. The opportunity is hers.

Tiny Tots Park, after two years, is going to be made whole again,

and the bandstand is being assessed for repairs. That is good news. But why is an engineer required to assess the bandstand’s condition?  It is a three-sided, small, simple structure on which a tree fell.

Canadian World Youth Exchange returns to Kincardine for a second consecutive year. Due to exceedingly positive feedback from last year’s exchange in Kincardine, Canadian World Youth is bringing to Kincardine 18 young people from Thailand and Canada in September for three months. They depart in late November for Thailand for another three months to complete the second phase of the program.

The Canadian World Youth (CWY) is a national non-profit organization offering communities and youth unique international educational experiences. Since 1971, over 27,000 youth and hundreds of communities across Canada have participated in exchange programs with 67 countries.

This is a landmark year for the Thailand program. 2004 is the 20th year of partnership between the Canadian World Youth and the Thai government. It would be good to recognize this anniversary. Council should consider a suitable memento to mark the occasion – a plaque with appropriate text and greeting hands maybe, CWY might have others, and our creative citizens can make their own suggestions. Let’s make their 20th year a memorable one in Kincardine as we put out the welcome mat.

The Canadian young people represent six provinces: Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario Quebec, and Saskatchewan. The Thai participants are from the Nan province in Northern Thailand.  In addition to the 18 youth, the program includes two Project Supervisors, Janina Strudwick from Edmonton and Miss Kanoknit Panawas. They will also be the supporting team in the second phase of the program in Thailand.

In both the Canadian and Thai phases of the program, the nine Thai youth are paired with nine Canadians and live with host families. This year, three days a week will be given to regular work placements and two days a week are reserved for group educational and volunteer days.

The supervisors currently are looking for host families and volunteer work projects for the 18 young people. It is an excellent opportunity for the generous folk of Kincardine to meet youth from across Canada and Thailand and to open another window on our global village.
