It is a pleasure to write about my favourite subject, young people. I have come to know many fine young men and women who carry the values and ideals that uplift communities and bring hope to people.

Kincardine has its share of these young people committed to human and civil rights, to the environment , to the downtrodden and to all those lying injured on the other side of the road who are ignored by  the self-serving. If I may paraphrase Karen Armstrong’s observation in The Spiral Staircase on the Holy Grail, these young knights forsake “the wasteland… where people live unauthentic lives, blindly following the norms of their society and doing only what other people expect”  and, instead, seek to let their light push away the darkness. One such modern knight is Lindsay Buckingham, a native of Kincardine and a graduate of KDSS.

Lindsay is in her fourth year of Honors Psychology and Social Justice at King’s University College, University of Western Ontario. She holds an excellent record in academic studies and volunteer work. This year, Lindsay is involved with Intercordia, a program involving course studies along with  three months of volunteer activity in a third world country.

Intercordia was started by Jean Vanier, who founded L’Arch for those with developmental disabilities. Intercordia invites partnerships with universities to give students, through class room studies and field experience, the basic skills of cross-cultural understanding and cooperation while developing a moral sensitivity to suffering.

On May 5, Lindsay will journey to Ecuador to begin three months of volunteer work either teaching English or being a teaching assistant in a regular class. At this point Lindsay does not know where she will be assigned other than it will be in a rural area, probably in the highlands, living with a peasant family.

Along with the thirteen other students in the program (ten to Ecuador, two to Belize, and two to Honduras) Lindsay needs to raise $1500.00. The Kincardine Rotary Club has donated $500.00. Readers wanting to assist should get in touch with Lindsay at 519-434-0247 or email: lbuckingham@uwo.ca. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $10.00.

We cannot all be knights but we can support those who dare to make the world a better place.
