Mayor Glenn Sutton wants to move forward. That is his response when councilor Maureen Couture asks that council apologize to the staff for the juvenile and insulting behaviour of Tiverton residents at the December 7, 2004 meeting in Tiverton. The mayor attended that meeting and, though it was his responsibility to defend the staff then, he failed his duty. It took councilor, Maureen Couture, who did not attend that shameful meeting, to say what the mayor ought to have said at the time and ought to have said now in support of Couture. Glenn is probably a decent person. But he has questionable leadership qualities. Glenn does not carry the moral authority to deal successfully with the contentious, festering issues left over from an unfinished amalgamation. Leadership is about creating a consensus when it seems not possible and then carrying the day. The sorry saga of the Tiverton wells versa a pipeline continues while costs rise and time is expended by council and staff. Until council decides now on extending the pipeline to Tiverton, the issue will be with us because the rising costs will always be a reality as long as the wells are used. The mayor and deputy mayor need to show unequivocal leadership for the building of the pipeline; any councilors with their wits about them would support this decision. Only then can the mayor, he who does not apologize, move forward. As for Tiverton residents’ plans to disrupt the community, it is never advisable to give in to threats of childish misbehavior whether in a child or in an adult. |
