Citizens of Kincardine should be thankful for the dedicated environmentalists in our midst. One such citizen is Jennifer Heisz, founder of Women’s Legacy. Women’s Legacy fought, correctly, for a binding referendum whether or not to have the nuclear waste dump here. The council gave us a flawed telephone poll. Women’s Legacy wanted expert opinion representing the ‘no’ side of the issue to be available to the citizens. Council members took money from OPG to staff the OPG campaign office. The OPG would have us take their word that the project is quite safe while council nods submissively in agreement. Remember Love Canal? Industry considered the buried chemical cesspool harmless. It was the little people who brought the tragedy into the open. From the ranks of ordinary people committed individuals rise up to protect our community. They receive no generous per diems from OPG. They get neither salary nor expenses from the tax payers. They work not for photo ops or public recognition but out of deep concern for the children in the community and the children’s future. They do not deserve snubs from council. According to the Ministry of the Environment there are contaminants, most exceeding provincial limits, in the ground water in the area of the nuclear plant and Inverhuron. The full details can be found on the website: www.womenslegacy.org. I encourage readers to visit the site. When this information was presented to council, the deputy mayor could only ask if Jennifer was prepared to sign her report – a not too subtle move at intimidation - while the mayor did nothing. It is time for the mayor and deputy mayor to shed their OPG trappings and support environmental champions such as Jennifer and the Coastal Conservation. It is our water. It is our lives.
