When activists protest against unethical industries, the perpetrators
often turn to their PR consultants to put a positive spin on their operations. And it’s been going on longer than you might imagine.7/28/04 Full Story...

Thank you Eileen Black for correcting me on the park’s name, it is appreciated.

I read where the Ontario tax payers paid $500 million for a Social Service computer system that was “inflexible from Day I” according to a report in the Toronto Star. The government says it will cost an extra $10 million to fix the system. Meanwhile the 83 year old Leslie Frost Natural Resource Centre near Dorset is being closed to save money. Approximately 70 jobs in the area will disappear, their contribution to the local economy will be lost which then reflects negatively on local business, and a valuable education resource will no longer be available to school children as far away as Toronto. Ordinary folk will pay through their taxes for this computer fiasco and 70 workers will pay with the loss of their livelihood. Who at Queens Park will take responsibility for any of this? The Tories, who gave a sweetheart deal to their friends and trumped it with a lucrative maintenance contract, refuse responsibility by denying there is a problem; the Liberals, who say they have no grounds to break the contract with Accenture (formerly Anderson Consulting), say they must live with it. They have a choice but choice brings responsibility which they do not want. Compare Premier McGuinty’s behaviour with that of Toronto’s Mayor David Miller’s decision, rightly or wrongly, to cancel the Island bridge contract. Who pays? Not Accenture, not Harris, not McGuinty, Ontario taxpayers pay for this latest piece of gross incompetence or clever scam. And the folks in Dorset will pay and pay and pay.

When was the last time a politician at any level took responsibility for his or her action and resigned? They have to be removed kicking and screaming. Tax payers are hit with millions of dollars for inquests because those who are responsible or know who are refuse the ethical weight of responsibility. Accepting responsibility for behaviour whether it is breaking election promises, helping friends or honest mistakes is a key pillar of good government.

Harry Truman, a most under-rated president of the USA, kept a sign on his desk. “The Buck Stops Here.” He practiced what it said. Those in political life should remember the buck stops with them. It does not stop with the people.
